Google Cloud announces a Gemini agent for work that runs jobs on Gemini or Anthropic's Claude, and gives each agent its own work account

Thomas Kurian's keynote pitch: “You give it objectives, not instructions.” VentureBeat says it is in private preview for a select group of customers.

Google Cloud announced the Gemini agent on 8 October at Gemini at Work 2026, in a post by Google Cloud chief executive Thomas Kurian adapted from his keynote. It is one agent for chat, knowledge work, media and running code. “You give it objectives, not instructions,” Kurian writes.

The notable detail is the model choice. Google says the agent runs each job on the model that fits best, “orchestrating across our Gemini family of models and Claude models from Anthropic today”. A rival lab's models are thus inside Google's flagship work agent.

Agents get identities of their own. “The agent receives its own Workspace account, including an email address, calendar, Drive, and presence in your company directory,” the post says, and coworker agents have “their own @agents.company.com emails”. Versions for industries are listed: “It is now in preview for Financial Services and Legal, and coming soon to Government, Healthcare, and Retail.” Google also claims: “In the last year, nearly 500 Google Cloud customers each processed more than one trillion tokens.”

Google's post does not say whether the core agent is generally available. VentureBeat reports a Google Cloud spokesperson as confirming it “is available starting today in private preview to a select group of customers”, and that it will be included “at no additional charge for customers where Gemini Enterprise is available.” The customer results in the post are Google's own.
