Reflection is set to release an open-weight model soon, aimed at the best Chinese open models, Axios reports
Axios says it will trail the leading US models at first. Other Western open-weight models are due this month, sources told Axios.
Axios reported on Sunday 4 October that Reflection, a US startup, is preparing to release a powerful open-weight model. In Axios's words: “Reflection's model, set to be released soon, is expected to initially lag behind the most cutting-edge U.S. models and be competitive with top Chinese open-weight models.”
The pitch, as Axios describes it, is that the marriage of an American open-weight model and Nvidia GPUs would give “individuals and companies a new, cheaper alternative to Anthropic, OpenAI and Google.” Axios says Reflection has held discussions with interested parties in Washington and elsewhere in recent weeks, and has signed large deals with Nebius and SpaceX to rent Nvidia AI servers.
Axios also reports, citing sources, that Reflection's first model “is set to be joined by other open-weight models from other Western players this month.”
No model, model card or release date has been published, and the size of the server deals is not given here because no issuer document was opened. This is a report about an upcoming release. It matters because, as this site has noted since September, the strongest open-weight models have mostly come from Chinese labs; a wave of Western ones would give companies that want to run models themselves more choice. Aleph Alpha's Kolibri-1, released on 3 October, is one already out.
