Trump forms a “Super Intelligence Force” led by spy chief Jay Clayton, FTC chair Andrew Ferguson and two other officials
A Sunday-morning Truth Social post makes Saturday's reports official. The group reports to the President and his chief of staff. No order or charter is on whitehouse.gov yet.
Why it matters: AI policy now sits with a body led by the head of the intelligence agencies and the chairman of the agency investigating the AI labs, and its remit includes the companies themselves. What it recommends in its first report will shape how the federal government handles AI incidents.
President Trump announced on Truth Social at 8:23 AM EDT on Sunday 4 October the formation of the “Super Intelligence Force (SIF)”. The post names four officials who will lead it: Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton; Federal Trade Commission Chairman Andrew Ferguson; Under Secretary of War for Research and Engineering and Chief Technology Officer Emil Michael; and Office of Personnel Management Director Scott Kupor. It will report to the President and to Chief of Staff Susie Wiles.
The post says the Force will coordinate the federal government's work “to ensure that America continues to lead the World in Super Intelligence”, and the government's engagement with “Consumers, Public Interest Groups, Religious Organizations, Critical Infrastructure Providers, and Super Intelligence Companies”. It presents the Force as following the White House Accord on Super Intelligence, which ran here on 30 September.
What changed since our 3 October story: Trump was then only expected to name Clayton, and the White House called it speculation. The post does not use the word “czar” and sets no deadline.
Reuters reports that he told the Wall Street Journal the task force would have 120 days to produce a report on the risks and opportunities of AI and the role the federal government should play. Citing the charter, the Journal says the panel will also review how the government collects reports of breaches, hacks and other incidents. “The risk of not being first is high,” Clayton told the newspaper. Implicator.ai reports that members include Vice President JD Vance, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, with David Sacks and Condoleezza Rice as outside advisers.
On Sunday afternoon the White House's presidential actions page had nothing setting up the Force. Ferguson's FTC confirmed on 1 October that it is investigating AI companies.
