The Pentagon tells the BBC it has stopped using Anthropic's Claude, after a phase-out deadline that ran out in late August

People familiar with the matter told the BBC that Claude was still in use the week before, including in operations against Iran.

The US Defense Department says it no longer uses Anthropic's AI tools. A department official said in a statement on Monday 5 October that the Pentagon “has ceased the use of Anthropic products”, the BBC reported. The BBC said Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth labelled the company a supply-chain risk in February and on 27 February set a six-month deadline to phase it out, which ran to late August. The BBC said it was not clear why it had taken longer.

Several people familiar with the matter told the BBC that Claude was still being used as recently as the week before, for research, analysis and intelligence gathering and in military operations against Iran, and that the model was built into Palantir's Maven Smart System. Android Headlines, citing the BBC, also reported that Claude was still in use inside Maven. An Anthropic spokesman declined to comment on the Pentagon's statement, the BBC reported.

The statement followed the D.C. Circuit's 25 September ruling that the Pentagon may keep the supply-chain-risk label on Anthropic. It is a separate step: the department now says the phase-out itself is done. The BBC's page was read here in a copy republished by MyJoyOnline and marked as the BBC's; the Pentagon's statement itself is not published, so every point is attributed to the BBC.
