Panmure Liberum's strategist says the AI bubble will burst in 2027 or 2028, and sets an S&P 500 target 36% below today's level

Joachim Klement told Bloomberg it is “the time to prepare”. In mid-September he was still assuming the index would reach 8,300.

Joachim Klement, head of market strategy at Panmure Liberum, a London investment bank, told Bloomberg in an interview published on 9 October that he now expects the AI trade to unwind within two years. “My core conviction is that the AI bubble will either burst in 2027 or in 2028, so sometime in the next two years,” he said.

Bloomberg spells out what that means for his numbers: “Klement’s 2027 year-end target of 5,000 points for the S&P 500 implies 36% downside from current levels.” His target for Europe's Stoxx 600 is 430, more than 30% below current levels. As recently as mid-September, Bloomberg reports, his key assumption was that the S&P 500 would reach 8,300 points by the end of next year.

On investor behaviour, he said: “It is a situation where people are just focusing on one thing and one thing only, and that is earnings and in particular tech earnings,” and: “What I tell people is now is the time to prepare.” The article does not name or link a Panmure Liberum research note, so these are interview remarks, not a published forecast.

Warnings of an AI bubble have been carried by about 80 outlets in the past week, by the Switchboard's press count, but most are commentary without a date or a number. Klement's call is a dated, named forecast. It came the same day Firmus pulled its float (see above) and a day after AI shares fell on a Financial Times report about OpenAI's revenue.
