OpenAI will remove GPT-4o, GPT-4o mini, GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 mini from its API on 14 January 2027, and points developers to GPT-6 Luna

Developers were told on 14 October. Fine-tuned versions of the models are switched off on the same date.

OpenAI's API deprecations page has a new entry dated 14 October 2026, headed “GPT-4 series model deprecations”. It says: “On October 14, 2026, we notified developers using certain GPT-4 series models of their deprecation and removal from the API on January 14, 2027.” That gives developers three months.

Five model snapshots go: gpt-4o-2024-08-06, gpt-4o-2024-11-20, gpt-4o-mini-2024-07-18, gpt-4.1-2025-04-14 and gpt-4.1-mini-2025-04-14. For every one, the recommended replacement is gpt-6-luna.

Fine-tunes are included: “Fine-tuned versions of these models follow the same shutdown schedule as their underlying base models.” A business that trained its own version of GPT-4o or GPT-4.1 for customer service, extraction or classification will have to retrain or move to another model by mid-January, and test that the new one behaves the same way.

The entry is about the API only and does not mention ChatGPT. It gives no reason for the retirement and no price comparison with GPT-6 Luna. OpenAI's newsroom could not be opened here, so the deprecations page is the only source.
