OpenAI seeks at least $30bn at a valuation of about $1.4 trillion, as bridge financing in place of an IPO, Bloomberg reports
The talks are at an early stage. The valuation excludes the new money and is up from $852bn in March.
OpenAI aims to raise at least $30bn in a new funding round at a valuation of about $1.4 trillion, not counting the new money, Bloomberg News reported on 29 September, citing people familiar with the matter, according to Reuters; Crypto Briefing carried the same figures. Bloomberg's own story was not opened here, and OpenAI has not confirmed the round, so the figures are Bloomberg's.
The proposed round would serve as bridge financing to provide capital in place of an IPO, Reuters reported, citing the Bloomberg report. On 21 September OpenAI said it would not go public this year, citing safety, a story the Switchboard ran that day. The Bloomberg report puts a size and a valuation on how it would raise money instead.
The discussions are at an early stage and the terms could change, Reuters reported. Both outlets say investor demand is driving the round, but neither names any investors. OpenAI was valued at $852bn in March, in a round with $122bn in committed capital, according to Reuters.
OpenAI did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment. The Switchboard noted the report in one line on 30 September, without its size or valuation.
