Nvidia is in early talks to invest more in Reflection AI or buy it, the Financial Times reports

An acqui-hire, which could avoid a long regulatory review, is one option. Nvidia has put $800 million into Reflection so far, the FT reported.

Nvidia is in early talks to deepen its investment in Reflection AI, the US open-model start-up, or to buy it, the Financial Times reported on 10 October, according to Reuters and SiliconANGLE. The FT's own story is paywalled and was not opened here, so the figures are the FT's.

A deal could take several forms. One is an acqui-hire, in which Nvidia would hire Reflection's staff and license its technology without buying the company; the FT said that route would probably avoid a lengthy regulatory review. Nvidia could also add equity or supply more chips and computing power. It has already invested $800 million in the start-up, the FT reported.

People familiar with the matter told the FT that an agreement could come within weeks but that the talks could still collapse. Reuters said it could not immediately verify the report, and neither company responded to requests for comment.

Reflection's chief executive, Misha Laskin, has said the company was raising money at a $25bn pre-money valuation, Reuters reported; SiliconANGLE said he told CNBC in April that the round had closed at that valuation.

The Switchboard's 17 October story on the release of Reflection's Beam model weights mentioned the FT report in one line. This is the full account of the talks, which have not been confirmed by either company.
