Microsoft rebuilds the Copilot app around Home, Code and Autopilot, an agent that keeps working without prompts
Code builds apps from plain-language requests on GitHub Copilot technology; Autopilot, formerly Scout, runs in the customer's own tenant. Agent work moves to usage billing.
Microsoft announced a rebuilt Copilot app on 25 September, in a post by Jared Spataro, its chief marketing officer for AI at Work. The app has three parts.
Home brings together Chat, for quick help, and Cowork, which carries out delegated tasks from start to finish, with Word, Excel and PowerPoint built in. Code lets a user describe an app, tracker, dashboard or workflow and have Copilot build it; Microsoft says it is “Powered by the same underlying technology as GitHub Copilot” and runs in a sandbox. Autopilot, previously called Scout, is “a persistent, proactive and personal agent that keeps working even when you’re not”, in Microsoft's words. It runs in the cloud inside the customer's tenant with its own identity, memory, computer and workspace, and can be @mentioned in Teams and Outlook.
Home and Code start rolling out through Microsoft's Frontier early-access programme in the coming weeks, and Autopilot moves to a private preview at the end of the month. Code comes to Microsoft 365 Premium and Pro subscribers in preview later this year.
Pricing splits in two: a fixed per-user licence covers everyday Copilot, while Cowork, Code, Autopilot and frontier models are billed by usage. Microsoft also added tools for managing AI spending. The post gives no prices or user numbers. The Next Web called the result a “super app”; Microsoft's post does not use the phrase.
