Microsoft is on track to pay Anthropic more than $2bn a year to use Claude in Copilot, The Information reports

The report credits Office chief Charles Lamanna with pushing Satya Nadella to pay for Anthropic's models despite the cost.

Microsoft is on track to pay Anthropic more than $2bn a year to use its Claude models in Copilot, The Information reported on 12 October, citing a person with knowledge of it. The Information's article is behind a paywall; its figures here come from two open outlets that report them, AI Weekly and CryptoBriefing.

According to AI Weekly, Charles Lamanna, who runs Microsoft's Office business and whom it calls the company's new Office chief, pushed chief executive Satya Nadella to pay for Anthropic models despite the higher cost, and Claude is now used alongside OpenAI's technology inside Copilot. CryptoBriefing, citing the report, says Microsoft is increasingly sending work to OpenAI models through an internal router to cut costs and protect margins.

The figure rests on one outlet and one source. AI Weekly notes the report does not say what Microsoft is buying, whether API use, dedicated capacity or a longer-term commitment. Neither company commented in the coverage read.
