Google signs for about 3.6 GW from Constellation, including 890 MW of new nuclear output from reactor upgrades

A 20-year deal pays for upgrades at 11 reactors on the PJM grid, alongside a 15-year deal for 2,700 MW more. Constellation shares jumped.

Google and Constellation Energy announced two power agreements on 6 October on the PJM grid, together about 3,590 megawatts: 890 MW of new capacity and 2,700 MW of existing output. The first is a 20-year power purchase agreement that pays for “uprates”, upgrades that raise a reactor's output, at 11 Constellation nuclear units on six sites in Illinois, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Constellation's release says the upgrades add 890 MW of new capacity, with the first expected by 2028. The second is a 15-year agreement for 2,700 MW more from Constellation's PJM fleet.

Constellation says the work means more than $4.3 billion of new investment by the company, about 7,200 construction jobs and about 4,400 existing jobs sustained. It presents the deal as a response to PJM's “Bring Your Own Power” proposal, the grid operator's push for big users such as data centres to bring their own supply. Neither company has given a price.

Investors liked it. Constellation stock was up about 12.75% at $301.73 in morning trading on 6 October, RTTNews reported. Upstox reported an early high of $307.42, nearly 15% above the previous close of $267.62.

For AI the point is power: Google is paying to add nuclear output to the grid its data centres draw on, rather than only buying power that already exists.
