CoreWeave shares fall 15.46% after a chart of its bond yields passing 15% spreads on X, and Oracle and Dell fall with it
Its chief executive reportedly told staff the company's backlog more than covers its debt. Other heavy AI borrowers fell by double digits.
CoreWeave closed at $65.78 on 14 October, down 15.46% from $77.81, on volume of about 111 million shares, according to StockAnalysis's price history.
SiliconANGLE reports that the slide followed a discussion on X that Chamath Palihapitiya started on Tuesday, when he posted a chart showing the yield on a $1.25bn batch of CoreWeave bonds briefly passing 15%. Elon Musk replied: “Yikes.” The Switchboard could not read the bond prices from an issuer or exchange document, so it gives no exact yield.
Chief executive Mike Intrator reportedly told staff in an internal memo: “We are confident in our backlog which more than supports all of our debt obligations.” SiliconANGLE links a Bloomberg report for the memo. The Switchboard found no CoreWeave release or filing dated 14 October.
The fall spread to other companies borrowing heavily to build AI capacity. SiliconANGLE reports Oracle closed 8.8% lower, Dell about 11.3% and AMD about 5.73%, while DigitalOcean, TeraWulf and Hut 8 each fell more than 10%. Yahoo Finance reported a broader chip sell-off the same day after hot inflation data. The day before, the Switchboard reported Intel's and Broadcom's chief executives saying capital, not chips, may be AI's biggest constraint; this is the bond market testing that view on one of the most indebted AI clouds.
