Bezos tells Fox News that AI productivity could let some people support a family working three days a week

He told Bret Baier on Special Report that hiring will get hard, not that jobs will vanish. Baier raised Amazon's corporate job cuts.

Jeff Bezos told Fox News's Bret Baier, in an interview aired on Special Report on Wednesday, October 7, that gains from AI could let some people work far less. Fox News's write-up quotes him: “Some people will also decide, you know what? I can support my family by working three days a week.” He added: “That's what productivity in the economy means.”

Bezos described a shortage of workers rather than mass unemployment. “It's going to actually be difficult to hire people,” he said, according to the same Fox article. Fox News's live blog says Baier pushed back with the roughly 30,000 corporate jobs Amazon has cut since late last year, and that Bezos answered that Amazon had grown its workforce a great deal during the pandemic.

On regulation, Bezos asked for a light touch. Fox quotes him: “You don't want to regulate knives. You want to regulate murder.”

Fox's press office had announced the interview on October 5. It was filmed at Blue Origin's complex in Cape Canaveral, with AI regulation and the economy among the topics. Bezos gave no timeline and named no industries.
