Barclays expects half its developers to be using Claude Code by the end of 2026, and most of its engineers in 2027
Anthropic says a Claude assistant at the bank has more than 16,000 users and the platform processes about 120,000 emails a day.
Anthropic said on 1 October that Barclays is widening its use of Claude across the bank. The post says: “As part of this rollout, Barclays expects Claude Code adoption to reach 50% of its developer population by the end of 2026, rising to a majority of software engineers in 2027.”
Some uses are already running, according to the post. More than 16,000 colleagues have adopted a knowledge assistant, which has handled over one million searches, and the platform processes approximately 120,000 emails each day.
Craig Bright, Barclays' Group Co-Chief Operating Officer, is quoted: “Software engineering and cyber security are both being reshaped by increasingly capable AI systems.” He describes the bank moving towards AI as an agentic capability built into how it builds, tests, secures and operates technology. Paul Smith, Anthropic's Chief Commercial Officer, said: “Claude now helps 16,000 Barclays' colleagues find answers for customers, sorts 120,000 emails a day, and will be in the hands of most Barclays engineers by 2027.”
All the figures come from Anthropic's page; Barclays' own release was not opened, so they are the vendor's account of its customer. A large regulated bank setting a public adoption target for a coding agent is still a marker for how fast agents are moving into the software teams of big employers.
