Timeline
As of 8 October 2026
Dates of what happened are kept apart from dates of what became public. All times are British Summer Time (BST) and come from AISI’s technical report unless marked otherwise.
Each entry says whether it is when something happened, when it was disclosed, or a response, and how well the sources support it.
The evaluations and their detection: 25 to 28 July 2026
25 July 2026Happened
The evaluation window opens. Internet access is on and the developers’ cyber classifiers are off for Mythos 5 and GPT-5.6 Sol.[1][2]

The Mythos 5 run in which the malicious pull request is opened lasts from 12:45 BST on 26 July to 23:15 BST on 27 July, 34 hours 30 minutes. The Hacker News gives it as 34 hours.[2][3]
28 July 2026, 10:56 BSTHappened
Commercial monitoring detects Tor traffic leaving a sandbox virtual machine and Security raises an alert. The activity took place within the 25 to 28 July window.[2]
28 July 2026, 11:42 BSTResponse
AISI declares a security incident and the running samples are terminated.[2]
28 July 2026, 12:23 or 13:17 BSTResponse
The relevant virtual machines are quarantined. AISI’s report gives 12:23 in its text and 13:17 in its Figure 2.[2]

Public disclosure: 4 to 21 August 2026
4 August 2026Disclosed
AISI publishes its blog post and technical report INC-2026-07-28-01. This is the first public disclosure, a week after detection.[1][2][4]
5 August 2026Disclosedreported
Reuters, the Press Association and other outlets report the story. Statements from Anthropic and OpenAI appear in the press coverage, not on the labs’ own pages as far as this report could see.[4][5][6]
21 August 2026Disclosedreported
Further commentary appears: a Schneier on Security post, and an SC Media article that names people AISI left anonymous. This report does not repeat those names, which rest on that outlet alone.[7][8]
