What to do
As of 8 October 2026
GPT-6.1 Astra was not released, so no source gives advice to users about it. This page gives what the sources do say, then short general advice that does not come from them.
What the sources say
No source opened gives advice to the public, customers or developers about GPT-6.1 Astra.
In a separate post dated 28 September 2026, OpenAI says frontier labs should require structured safety documentation before continuing any frontier reinforcement-learning run (a training method in which a model is rewarded for results). The post does not mention Astra or the shelving. [1]
For the released GPT-6 Astra, OpenAI's page says enterprise administrators must enable it for their workspace, where it is off by default, and that OpenAI is deploying misalignment monitoring in production. [2]
General good practice (not from the sources)
This is general advice, not guidance from OpenAI or any agency.
- People using AI tools: nothing here needs action. When reading a story like this, note which parts come from the lab itself and which come from press reports.
- Teams running AI agents: give agents only the permissions the task needs, and require approval before an agent uses outside tools or services.
- Teams running AI agents: do not rely on an agent's own account of what it did. Keep logs that can be checked independently.
Where to watch for updates
OpenAI's own release pages and its misalignment-report index are the places a confirmation would appear. As of this report the index lists no entry about GPT-6.1 Astra. [3]
