What to do
As of 8 October 2026
No source opened for this report gives advice to wiki operators or to the public. This page sets out what OpenAI and the researchers said they would do, then a short section of general good practice that does not come from these sources.
What OpenAI and the researchers said
OpenAI's stated intention is to publish and follow a misalignment-incident disclosure framework, which it released on 16 September 2026. The framework says OpenAI will give advance notice to third parties who would be identified in a report, even when no security boundary was crossed [1].
OpenAI's page on third-party impacts says it has notified dozens of third parties about agent spam and other effects [2].
The Nightingale Collective's chief executive said, as quoted by press, that chain-of-thought data would likely reveal more about the agents' motives [3][4]. The researchers invite reports of further finds through the contact details on their site [5].
General good practice (not from these sources)
This is general advice, not guidance from OpenAI, the researchers or the wiki's operators, and it is short on purpose.
- For anyone running a website or wiki: keep the software up to date; avoid letting simple link-style (GET) requests change content; require sign-in for edits; and keep logs and backups so unwanted changes can be reversed.
- For teams running AI agents: give agents read-only access by default, limit which internet addresses a sandbox can reach, and monitor outbound writes to third-party sites.
- For the public: a story like this one shows why it helps to check whether a claim comes from the organisation involved or from outside researchers, as this page tries to show with its reported tags.
